Obituary of Helen B Foster

Helen Booth Foster, 92, of Susquehanna, PA, died Monday, May 2, 2022, at Barnes Kasson Skilled Nursing Facility.

Born May 19, 1929, in Elkton, Maryland, daughter of the late Sayres and Mable Smith Booth.  Helen was a graduate of Elkton High School, class of 1946.  The family moved to Harford, PA in the 1940’s to manage the Harford Store.  It was while living there that she met and married Charles Garfield Foster, her husband of 42 years.

Helen raised her three children and was an active member of the community.  This included working the polls every election day and being co-President of the PTA while her children were attending school. She took a job with the Susquehanna County Press in 1964 to assist her friend with a subscription campaign and it soon blossomed into a job as a reporter and photographer for the paper.  In a career that spanned 50 years, Helen documented the day-to-day doings of Susquehanna Country.  By 1974, she became editor of the Susquehanna County Press, which later merged with the Montrose Independent becoming the Susquehanna County Independent.  She served as bureau chief in the Susquehanna office, and eventually became a freelance writer for the paper until her retirement at the age of 85.

Helen was a member or a board member for such groups as the Nellie Jane DeWitt Business and Professional Women’s Club, Republican Women, Children and Youth Literacy, Barnes Kasson Hospital, People’s National Bank, the PTA of Susquehanna Consolidated Schools, and the First Congregational Church of Harford.

She was honored as Distinguished Citizen of the Year by the Boy Scouts of America, Woman of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce and Grand Marshall of the annual Susquehanna Hometown Festival.

Perhaps her most cherished award was a lifetime pass to the Harford Fair given to her in recognition for her years of covering all the events during Fair Week.

She is survived by her children; Thomas B. Foster (Diane) of Thompson, PA; Garlyn Manganiello (Paul) of Bristol, NH; Janet Foster of Ashland, NH.  Her grandchildren are Michael Manganiello (Tarah) of New Hampton, NH; Charles Manganiello (Tobey) of Lander, WY; Mark Manganiello (Melissa) of Hopkinton, NH; Elizabeth Manganiello (Rudy) of State College, PA; Abigayle Chaffee (Tim) of Warren Center, PA and great grandchildren Josie and Luna Chaffee of Warren Center, PA.  She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband, Charles Garfield Foster, parents Sayres and Mable Smith Booth, sister Jeanette, sister Doris Booth Morrison, grandson Ryan D. Hennessey, son-in-law Michael D. Geiger, stepmother Myra Grant Booth and stepbrothers Albert and Dale Grant.

A celebration of life will be held on June 9, 2022, at the First Congregational Church of Harford, Pennsylvania located on State Route 2063, Harford, PA.  The family will receive friends and family in the church hall at 10 AM, service in the church at 11 AM and luncheon in the church hall following the service.
