Obituary of John R. Wilson

John Riley Wilson, 82, of Montrose, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2022, at Allied Services Scranton Hospice Center. His wife of 57 years, Dawn (Barnhart) Wilson, survives.

John was born March 21, 1940, the eldest child of the late William and Mary Ruth (Samworth) Wilson in Coatesville. He grew up in a farming family, and moved many times throughout his childhood, eventually settling in the New Milford area. John raised Guernsey cows, and successfully showed with championships at the state level.

He was a 1958 graduate of Blue Ridge High School. After graduating, John served in the US Navy as a Gunner’s Mate during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After leaving the service, he returned to Montrose where he met Dawn and they married on April 10, 1965.

John worked hard to provide for his family. For many years, he was employed in the warehouse at Procter & Gamble on a seven-day swing shift, and also was a substitute school bus driver when his schedule allowed. Following his “retirement,” he found work locally at RitzTex, and then later served as the parking enforcement officer with Montrose Borough. John was elected as the Mayor of Montrose and served three terms (2006-2017). John was a member of the Franklin Forks United Methodist Church, Hallstead American Legion, and a past member of the United Fire Company.

In his later years, John could often be found visiting with people at businesses in downtown Montrose, enjoying a cup of coffee or a draft beer before heading home for the day. He loved holiday dinners and was always first in the buffet line; he amassed a large collection of baseball caps and t-shirts – some dating back decades but remaining in pristine condition. Children and animals loved him and were drawn to his quiet but playful sense of humor. He extended friendship and respect to everyone he met.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by his children: a son, John (Amy) Wilson of Lancaster, and daughter, Staci Wilson (Rich Secord) of Hallstead; grandchildren: Skylar Secord and Miah Wilson; siblings: Joe, Margaret “Jean” Taylor, Bob, Tom, Marilyn, and Bill Jr.; sister-in-law, Susan Barnhart Rhinevault; brother-in-law, Gary (Rose) Barnhart; special niece and nephews: Denelle Myers, Nathan Barnhart and Zac Barnhart, and great niece, Jenna; step grandchildren: ShaunaLynn (Ian) White, and Melisa Leach; six step great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his siblings: Wesley Wilson; an infant brother and infant sister; and his in-laws, Lewis and Elwanda Barnhart.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John can be made to: Allied Services Foundation, 100 Abington Executive Park, Clarks Summit, PA 18411.
