Sam grew up in Harrisburg and graduated from William Penn High School where he demonstrated a talent for playing the trumpet. After graduating from high school, which was at the beginning of the Korean war, he joined the Navy. After completing the Navy School of Music curriculum, he earned a reputation as an accomplished jazz trumpeter. Later he was assigned to the USS Hornet, so he and his trumpet traveled around the world, playing music jobs in many international ports as well as aboard the ship. After the Navy he earned his Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Lebanon Valley College. While in college, Sam met and married Cynthia J. Patton. They were to celebrate their 61st anniversary August 25.
Sam's passions were teaching and performing music. He first taught at Montrose High School in Pennsylvania, under the mentorship of Maurice Taylor. During that time, he earned his Master's degree in Music Education from Ithaca College. The Harrisburg Symphony and the Binghamton Symphony added yet another dimension to his musical experiences.
In 1962 Sam became a band director for the Vestal Central School district in New York and spent 26 years teaching instrumental music to students of all ages. Jazz ensemble, field shows, wind ensemble and concert band filled his time.
Besides his love for music, Sam was an avid golfer, bowler, and fisherman. He was a member of the Montrose Country Club since 1959 and spent his winters in Lady Lake, Florida, playing the many courses available there in The Villages. He has to his credit a hole in one in golf and a perfect 300
in bowling. He also was fond of camping and has traversed the country several times with his wife and canine companions.
He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Harrisburg Consistory, and the Zembo Shrine. He was a member of the Vestal United Methodist Church, the Morrison United Methodist Church, New York State School Music Association, New York State United Teachers, Ayres-Stone VFW Post 5642, the American Legion Gardner-Warner Post 154, and Roadtrek, International.
