Reverend Paul R. Carlson, St Petersburg, FL, formerly of Montrose, PA, passed away January 26, 2018, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, after a brief illness. Born in 1928, Rev. Carlson began his career in 1950 as a journalist for the Binghamton (NY) Sun, radio station WNBH (New Bedford, MA), and the Pocono Record in Stroudsburg, PA. He received his BA degree from Barrington (RI) College, his M.Div. from Pittsburgh (PA) Theological Seminary, and his Ed.D. from New York University. Early in his ministerial career, he served churches in Harmony and Trafford, PA. A stint with the World Council of Churches took him to Geneva, Switzerland, and New York City before he returned to parish ministry, serving churches in Pine Plains and Ancramdale, NY, Richmond Hill, NY, Edenton, NC, Frankfort, OH, and Scranton, PA. After retiring to Montrose, he served as pastor of the Silver Lake Presbyterian Church. Long active in interfaith efforts, Dr. Carlson served on the National Leadership Conference for Israel and the Religion News Association. Rev. Carlson wrote seven books on diverse topics including alcoholism, death and dying, Presbyterian history, ecumenism, and interfaith relations. Rev. Carlson is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, the former Myrtle Elizabeth Warner of Montrose. He leaves behind a brother, Donald, sister-in-law Anne Marie, two sons, Paul Jr. and Timothy, two daughters in law, Laura and Elizabeth, two grandsons Daniel and Aaron, and a great granddaughter, Eleonor.
Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church of Montrose, PA with Rev. Jason Clapper officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday at the church from 10:00 AM until time of the service.
