Retha A. Stone

Retha Amelia Summers Hall Stone was born January 13, 1917, in Franklin Forks, PA and passed away on January 30, 2018 at Gracious Living Estates, South Montrose, PA.  Retha lived an amazing 101 years.  She grew up in Franklin Forks, graduated from Montrose High School and earned her teaching degree from Mansfield Normal School. Her beginning teaching years were in one room schoolhouses.  Retha and Don Hall married and lived on a dairy farm near Laurel Lake with Don’s parents.   In 1952 Retha began to teach in the new Lathrop Street Elementary School in Montrose, PA.  When Don passed away in 1967, Retha sold the dairy farm and moved to Montrose.  She continued to care for her father in law, Art Biggar, who lived to be 100 years old.      After 38 years of teaching, Retha retired in 1975 and married Leon Stone, who passed away just two years later.   Retha was a member of the Franklin Forks United Methodist Church from a young age and served faithfully, being active in the church into her late 80’s.  She also was an active member of the Lawsville Grange for over 6 decades.  Retha was a member of other service organizations as well, and enjoyed participating in group activities and projects.  She loved gathering with family and friends, taking pictures, singing in the church choir, reading, sending cards and letters, doing crafts, playing pinochle, bowling, taking bus trips, and she liked cats.  Retha did not have children of her own, but she had a huge family of students with whom she kept in touch, and a long list of nieces and nephews that always received  birthday and Christmas cards and gifts.  Retha is predeceased by her husbands and by her brother Edwin Summers and sister-law, Trudy Summers. Also brother–in-laws, Richard Hall, Robert Hall, Kenneth Hall, and sister-in-law, Marion (Larry), Raynor.  She is survived by a step daughter, Sharon Mclain, Florida;  Step grandchildren Kelly and Joey; sister-in-law Barbara (Kenneth)Hall, Vestal, NY;  nieces and nephews, Jack (Reggie) Raynor, Laurel Lake, PA;  Janet (Raynor)Pekera, North Carolina; Sharon (John) Burner, Elgin, Illinois;  Sally (Ronald) Zahora, Hallstead, PA; Nancy (Ken Ketchum), Summers, Castle Creek, NY;  Darwin Hall, Texas; Darroll (Janet) Hall Montrose, PA; Pam (Hall) Clifford, Virginia; Eric (Karen) Hall, North Carolina; Kim (Doug) Belke, Brackney, PA; Alice (Hall) Pietrafesa, Florida; and David (Denna) Hall, Florida.

Services: 2:00 PM Saturday, February 3rd   at Franklin Forks United Methodist Church, Montrose, PA 

Visitation: from 1:00 PM until time of service at the church.
